The Land Lab research team of Sant’Anna School Institute of Life Sciences presented the results of the research project “HORIZON 2020 FREEWAT” at the conference Connected Smart Cities in Bruxelles and at the EU-GULF Innnovation Seminars in Abu Dhabi.

Giovanna De Filippis gave her presentation on HORIZON 2020 FREEWAT project coordinated by Sant’Anna School, at the Connected Smart Cities conference in Bruxelles. The conference was organized by the Open & Agile Smart Cities network. On January 11, 2018, Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, gave her keynote address at this eight sessions conference focusing on “Cities Driving the Digital Transition”. Giovanna De Filippis took part at the seventh session Natural Resources: Digital Water and Beyond. She presented the FREEWAT project Open-source solutions for groundwater management. The FREEWAT software, downloaded over 3,000 times, is based on the integration of different software tools (SpatiaLite Relational Database Management System, dedicated tools for pre and post-processing of data and open source simulation codes). The platform was designed for water authorities, public and private institutions and policy makers. It is now recognized as a EU flagship initiative to meet the global challenges associated with the management of water resources.

On January 15, 2018, Rudy Rossetto, as member of the European Innovation Partnership on Water, attended the International Water Summit held in Abu Dhabi. Rossetto presented some of the key achievements of the project for ensuring an integrated approach to water resource management in the Arabian Gulf area. Within the framework of the initiative EU-GULF Innovation Seminars, Rossetto delivered his presentation on Open-source solutions for groundwater management and the FREEWAT project and the digital solutions to increase the coverage and exchange of digital data, with specific reference to the aquifer recharge in Suvereto (Livorno) as a part of the EU LIFE REWAT project.

Rudy Rossetto took part in the Early-stage innovations for tomorrow’s water challenges panel, with a specific focus on how innovation in water management can support the achievement of the objectives supported by EU water Directives, and the level of replicability/adaptability of such innovations that might be achieved in the countries of the Gulf, with specific reference to the Euro-Mediterranean region.
